Somerhalder played Boone Carlyle on Lost, a main character in the first season of the groundbreaking series, and then had a recurring role in seasons 2, 3, and 6. However, Somerhalder is primarily known for playing Damon Salvatore, the main character in the cast of The Vampire Diaries. The Vampire Diaries aired on The CW from 2009 to 2017 and had many loyal fans who were invested in the love triangle between Damon, Stefan, and Elena.
Following the success and loyal following he gained from The Vampire Diaries, Somerhalder continued to star in projects. In 2019, he starred in the Netflix series V Wars alongside his wife Nikki Reed. V Wars is a vampire show based on the anthology series and comic book series of the same name. However, the show was canceled by Netflix after just one season and remains Somerhalder's last credited role as an actor. In a 2024 interview, Somerhalder revealed that he had officially retired from acting.

Somerhalder married his wife Nikki Reed, who starred as Rosalie Hale in the Twilight series, in 2015. According to E! News, after V Wars, the couple moved to a ranch outside of Los Angeles and focused on raising their family, which includes their two children. While both Somerhalder and Reed fondly look back on their acting careers, they are very happy with their lives now. In addition to raising their family, the couple has also focused on farming, environmental conservation, and business.
In 2023, Somerhalder and Reed co-founded The Absorption Company, a tech-driven nutritional supplement brand dedicated to transparency and educating people about what they put into their bodies. Additionally, the couple also served as executive producers on the 2023 documentary Common Ground, which explores the myriad issues humanity faces related to the state of the world’s soil. Common Ground explains how the regenerative agriculture movement can improve the global food system and help combat climate change.

While Somerhalder has stepped away from acting and is now focusing on new endeavors, he has admitted that he might consider returning to Hollywood to revive V Wars. Given that V Wars was the first major show Somerhalder starred in since The Vampire Diaries and was a collaboration between him and his wife, it makes sense that the retired actor would be interested in a potential second season of V Wars. In an interview with PEOPLE at the Environmental Media Association (EMA) Awards in October 2024, Somerhalder said:
"I think it's in the rearview mirror. I do. Well, I dunno, we got the rights back for V Wars, but I just don't know how the hell we would ever make a TV show. We're building three companies at the same time, raising kids."
While it's doubtful that a second season of V Wars will ever happen, especially since the Lost actor isn't entirely sure he's interested in it, there is some hope. Longtime fans of Somerhalder will no doubt be happy to see him on their screens again if he decides to return to acting.
