First Look at Toothless and Hiccup
The first trailer for the new How to Train Your Dragon movie has been revealed. Following the incredible story of Toothless and Hiccup’s relationship, the DreamWorks animated film became one of the most popular films of the 21st century. It grew into a trilogy that ended with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 2019. Since then, a live-action How to Train Your Dragon adaptation has been announced and will be released next year. The film stars Julian Dennison, Gabrielle Howell, Bruin James, Gerard Butler, and Mason Timms.

The trailer opens with a long shot of Berk, the Scandinavian island where How to Train Your Dragon is set. Butler's Stoick speaks to Hiccup, saying, "When you pick up that axe, you pick up all of us with you." Hiccup asserts that he doesn't dare to slay dragons while showing off a swarm of CGI dragons. As the trailer continues, more familiar story beats are revealed, including Hiccup's introduction to Toothless. In addition to the trailer, the official @HTTYDragon page has released a poster for the film, which can be found below:
Based on the How to Train Your Dragon trailer, it looks like the live-action version of the story will follow a very similar structure to the animated film. To prove himself as a Viking, Hiccup attempts to slay a dragon, but can’t bring himself to do so when he first sees Toothless’s poignant eyes. The trailer ends by showing Toothless and Hiccup’s first contact, so how much How to Train Your Dragon follows the original live-action remains to be seen.
In addition to the similarity in story, several elements are more or less directly copied from the animated film. For example, the trailer’s ending includes the iconic shot of Hiccup calmly placing his hand on Toothless’s nose. The soundtrack at the end of the trailer also sounds almost identical to the original Oscar-nominated score from the first film. This last detail makes sense since composer John Powell is returning to compose the live-action score. The homage to the first film suggests that this live-action version will remain fairly faithful.
Our Take On The How To Train Your Dragon Trailer
One of the most notable similarities between the previous How to Train Your Dragon trilogy and this trailer is Toothless’s design. While the other characters look slightly different from their original counterparts, Toothless is designed to look almost identical to the dragon in the animated How to Train Your Dragon. The familiarity may draw people into the film, but it could also lead to harsher comparisons. With this trailer out, it will be interesting to see how audiences react to its visual style.
The Release Date of How to Train Your Dragon is set for release on June 13, 2025.
