Joel Miller's heartbreaking moment in The Last of Us TV adaptation recently teased HBO's latest behind-the-scenes video. Based on the award-winning PlayStation 3 video game of the same name, the upcoming horror drama stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, a powerful black market smuggler tasked with escorting Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the post-apocalyptic United States to the militant revolutionary group. known as fireflies. Although reluctant to take the job at first, he quickly realizes its importance when he discovers that Ellie carries a rare immunity to the fungal zombie infection that plagues Earth.
HBO Max recently shared a behind-the-scenes The Last of Us video that teases a devastating moment for Joel early in the season. How Sarah death changes Joel?
Although the details on the specifics of Sarah's death may differ in the upcoming TV series, the narrative meaning behind his loss will likely remain the same as from the original The Last of Us video game. After a long day at work, Joel returns home to find Sarah asleep on the couch, waiting for him. She wanted to give her only father a gift on his birthday. The short scene showed the bond they had shortly before the outbreak came to their doorstep.
A few hours later, Joel, Sarah, and Joel's brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) try to escape the infection but find themselves caught in the middle of a chaotic panic as the citizens of Austin, Texas have the same idea. Joel and Sarah abandon the car and come face to face with a soldier acting on his orders to kill anyone in plain sight. Joel survives the encounter, but Sarah dies in his arms. His devastating loss causes Joel to lose faith in humanity. Although not seen in the original game, Joel reveals that he went to a dark place, stealing from others and killing those who got in his way, eventually causing his brother to abandon him and join the Fireflies.
However, his fateful meeting with Ellie stirs up feelings he hasn't felt since before his daughter's death. As they trek across the country in search of fireflies, Joel and Ellie form a bond that only a father and daughter could develop. The pain of Sarah Joel's death may have pushed her deeper into despair, but Ellie's precocious personality and unbridled hope defy her protector's hardened exterior. With The Last of Us premiering on January 15th, audiences won't have to wait much longer to see the heartbreaking moment that shapes Joel's future.
