The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness supports a theory that the Scarlet Witch could become a villain in Phase 4 of the MCU.
The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness supports a big theory from the fourth stage of the Scarlet Witch. The second trailer shows much of Wanda Maximoff, in and out of the Scarlet Witch costume she first wore in the Disney+ miniseries WandaVision, as Stephen Strange searches for her to help counter a multiversal threat. However, some of Wanda's notes in the Doctor Strange 2 trailer, along with a few other key details, seem to indicate she won't be quite as useful as Doctor Strange hopes.
Wanda's story in all the comics, as well as in the MCU, has been repeatedly one of a loss. WandaVision emphasized the many sacrifices she had to make in her life, and the series ended with her once again sacrificing her happiness for the liberation of the people of Westview. Although Wanda made some bad choices in WandaVision, she wasn't the villain of the show, as she was initially unaware of how Westview's illusions were created and eventually decided to give it up, even though it also meant goodbye to Vision and her children. Although she made the heroic decision at the time, some viewers wondered if there was a truly villainous path in her future.
The trailer for Doctor Strange 2 suggests that the Scarlet Witch will turn into the villain in the movie. A scene in the first trailer shows Dr. Strange approaching Wanda at the cherry blossom farm as she acts very apologetic for her actions in Wanda Vision. However, both the farm and its unfortunate behavior maybe just other illusions. The second trailer reveals the Scarlet Witch facing Strange while he's wearing the same outfit he was wearing on the farm, and the trees from before have turned into dead husks. WandaVision has already showcased Wanda's ability to produce powerful illusions - in the series' post-credits scene, it's a version of the tea she innocently sipped outside a remote cabin while the Scarlet Witch is simultaneously studying Darkhold, presumably to learn more about the multiverse and how she can restore her children. Showing a false version of herself, which hides her true intentions, will become second nature by the time Doctor Strange 2 takes place.
In the trailer, she told Doctor Strange, "You break the rules and become a hero. I Do it, I become the enemy. that doesn't seem fair." Wanda has suffered from heartbreak over and overall her life, and unlike some of the other Avengers, her pain has been somewhat understated in the movies compared to theirs. In WandaVision, she was even denied permission to bury Vision's body and ended up alone with her grief. Later in the trailer for Doctor Strange 2, Wanda comforts the sad Scarlet Witch in Westview, probably because no one else will. Wanda is the only person who wishes to be there for herself. Everyone has a breaking point when they can't handle more pain, and Wanda has endured more than most people can handle in their lifetime. It seemed she was finally ready to respond.
The trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness supports a theory that the Scarlet Witch will become a villain. Perhaps Wanda Maximoff has finally had enough of losing and will start taking what she wants instead. She's unlikely to be the movie's only villain given her large cast of characters and little-seen in the plot, but moving forward in Phase 4 of the MCU, Scarlet Witch may not remain a hero for much longer.
