Shadowhunters, is a TV series that is based on Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments books series, who lasted three seasons on Freeform, but fans were constantly a dedicated bunch. Of course, this means that they noticed when some certain storylines were taken directly from the books,
Whether or not the books were better than the show is subjective, but the spirit of Claire's world and characters were really brought to life by the showrunners, and that is something special. Here are five plot points are taken from the books,

In both series and books, Jace and Clary meet, sparks fly and become romanticly entangled. Then they discover Jace's true origins and he's actually Clary's brother. But then the plot turns again and turns out that Valentine Morgenstern lied about Jace's true identity.
Both Jace and Clary are infused straight into the angel's blood, but they're not siblings. By this time, Clary has been dating her lifelong boyfriend Simon to try to stop her feelings for Jace, who she believes is her brother.

While Jace didn't turn out to be her brother, Clary had a sibling long ago. It turned out that while he was in the womb, Valentine experimented with Demonic Blood on him without Jocelyn's consent or knowledge. But the child turned into something dark and brutal, and Jocelyn always felt that something was wrong with Jonathan Christopher.
As soon as he grew up, he took the name Sebastian and worked with his father trying to take Clary. Sebastian just wanted a family but what his father did to him with Demonic blood spoiled his intentions and actions, in the end, Clary was the one who killed her brother

Both versions of Clare's story introduced the werewolf Maia and Drama, her former boyfriend Jordan, who happened to be the wolf that bit her and turned her. Jordan re-entered the picture working for the Praetor Lupus under the pretense of looking for a roommate.
Simon, dating Maia at that time, unknowingly returned Jordan to Maia's life, sending her to reeling. In the end, Maia and Jordan reconciled, leaving Simon single again. They returned together before Jordan died.

Clary's Nephilim injection filled with blood directly from a live angel makes her stronger than the regular Shadowhunter, who are all descended from the other Nephilim. This gives her the ability to create new runes that were not given to Shadowhunters in the Gray Book, the original runes that Raziel gave to Jonathan.
Creating new runes allows Clary to create portals, and magic is only available once for warlocks. It also challenges the Shadowhunter's way of life by introducing new ideas that lead to teaming up with Downworlders.

The Shadowhunters series could not have succeeded without including the fan's favorite ship, Malec. The romance between magician Magnus and Shadowhunter Alec is a classic star-crossed lovers trope that created exciting drama. As a dutiful Shadowhunter and his son, Alec denied his sexual life for fear of losing his peers and family's acceptance.
But when Magnus met, everything changed. Together, they changed everyone's minds and hearts Shadowhunters and Downworlders alike. Not everyone agreed with their relationship, but Malec showed that children of demons and angels could coexist.
